Residents File Notice to Repeal Utility Users Tax
Today a group of Glendale Residents filed a “Notice of Intention” to repeal Glendale’s existing
utility taxes with the City Clerk. A group of four Glendale residents formed the Glendale Tax Limitation Committee (Information) with the specific goal of repealing the city’s 26.8 Million Utility Tax.
In an attached “Proponent Statement” filed with the notice of intention, the committee commented of their reason for this action;
“From 2001 through 2012, Glendale’s population actually declined by 4.5 %, during the same period the city’s “budget” increased by 62 %, rising from $438 million to an astonishing $700.9 million.” Even with this unprecedented increase in the city’s budget the City Council is currently proposing further increases to the city’s utility taxes.
It is the position of this committee that the current utility tax creates an undue hardship of the city’s residents and businesses. Further increases are out of the question and clearly show the City’s lack of fiscal management.
Further commenting on why repealing should be placed on the ballot, Committee’s principal officer and longtime Glendale resident, William Taliaferro stated,
“Because city leaders are either unable or unwilling to control spending and manage resources, Glendale citizens must take direct action to ensure that they do so. Reducing city revenue will force them to manage competently rather than perpetually seeking new ways to tax us. We are only asking for a 4% reduction in the city’s budget. If they cannot manage a 4% reduction in revenue, then we must do it for them.”
